Title: Empirical Inferences on Variance Components of Multilevel Models for Complex Survey Data
With the presence of complex sampling in a multilevel model, inference on the variance components can be challenging. In this project, we extend a resampling technique called artificial population bootstrapping (APB) developed by Thompson and Wang (2012) to investigate the inference on the variance components of a two-level model with continuous outcomes. The sampling design, which may be informative, is carried out in stages corresponding to the levels.  The inferential issues include: the bias correction, the estimation of variance of variance component estimators, estimation of confidence intervals for variance components. Simulation studies show it to work well for inference even when the sample size at the lowest level is small. This a joint work with Mary Thompson from University of Waterloo.
