• Around 1996 I was involved in a study at Queen's University in Canada which needed to display orientation data: rotations of objects in 3D.
  
• A sensor would measure position and orientation of a sensor attached to a subject during an ergonomics study; it needed to be calibrated.
• To choose a sensible model, I needed to be able to visualize the data.
